![]() | The Early Mandolin - James Tyler and Paul Sparks
The name "mandolin" was used to refer to two quite different instruments: the gut-stringed mandolino, played with the fingers, and the later metal-stringed Neapolitan mandoline, which was played with a plectrum. This is the first book devoted exclusively to these two early instruments about which information in reference books is scant and often erroneous. The authors uncover their rich and varied musical history, examining contemporary playing techniques and revealing the full extent of the instruments' individual repertories, which include works by Vivaldi, Sammartini, Stamitz, and Beethoven. The book's ultimate aim is to help today's players to produce artistically satisfying performances through an understanding of the nature and historical playing style of these unjustly neglected instruments. |

![]() | Mandolin Orchestras of North America - Year 2000
A continual presence in America were the mandolin orchestras. After the early-century Golden Age, they were ravaged by loss of members and conductors as well as an inability to interest new generations of players. They were very much local entities, playing to limited audiences. Courage of somehow staying the course rewarded survivors during the mid-1980's. Entering the new millenium, orchestras are an integral part of mandolin's recent accelerated growth. Olde ones grow and newer groups are formed. There is very little written about mandolin, let alone the orchestra phenomenon. It's what prompted editors of Mandolin Quarterly Magazine to put together what they hoped would be a small representative mandolin folio. Most American orchestras responded. Ergo, the folio turned into a book. After Max McCullough's excellent introduction of mandolin in the 20th century, each participating orchestra presents information about itself on two pages. Results indicate great diversity and uniqueness as they enter a new millenium. The one constant is their optimism for the future. |
